I am a former radio personality and photographer. To make sure I was more present for my children I became a substitute teacher at both St. James Cathedral School and Bishop Moore Catholic High School.
I love to spend time with my children, my friends, and travel with my husband. And am especially passionate about providing support for babies and children.
Faces of Philanthropy Q & A with Nan McClain-Garbett:
Q: What inspired you to join the Women’s Philanthropic Giving Circle?
A: My friend Sarah invited me to Mass and a luncheon a few weeks ago. As I listened to each of the ladies speak and sat watching the video presentation, I thought it was a good opportunity for me to get back to my roots of being a part of and giving back to my community.
Q: Who inspired your approach to giving?
A: My father deeply inspired me to be giving. He was “others oriented”. My father was not Catholic, but he worked very hard to give his three children a Catholic education (grade school and high school.) He made it clear that although money helps, time is invaluable, and listening is a gift. He would tell my siblings and me, “Everyone has something to bring to the table, offer them a chair.”
Q: What message would you share with women considering joining?
A: It is a gift we have been given to be in a position that we can make a difference.
Q: What kind of impact do you hope the Circle makes in our community?
A: I would like to think we are setting an example that people are observing, and by observing they too will want to make a difference in their community. I’m looking forward to working with all of the ladies in the Giving Circle.
