Faces of Philanthropy Q & A with Lisa Meier:
Q: What inspired you to take on a leadership role within the Women’s Philanthropic Giving Circle (WPGC) as an Executive Committee member?
A: I was invited to join the WPGC but didn’t know a lot about giving circles. I did know that our combined funds could go a lot farther than our individual donations. My favorite part of the WPGC is our Pitch Party! I love hearing how so many of the organizations asking for grants were started by women who saw a need. As Catholic women, we are called to help with those needs.
I was recently asked to be the Programs Chair for the WPGC. This has been an incredible honor and a way for me to give back to a group of women who have inspired me!
Q: Who inspired your approach to giving?
I’m a first generation American and grew up with the example of my grandparents working two jobs each and making it a priority to “put in the envelope” on Sundays. I was very aware that this was an important sacrifice and priority. This also shaped my desire to become a nurse which led to my involvement in the Haiti Mission at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Jesus says in Matthew 25 that whatever we do for the least of our brothers and sisters, we do for him. The WPGC is a beautiful way to serve Him.
Q: What inspired you to join the Women’s Philanthropic Giving Circle?
A: My husband and I opened a Donor Advised Fund with the Catholic Foundation. This gives us the ability to very thoughtfully invest and give. It’s important to our family that we support organizations that are guided by Catholic values. We have open conversations with our kids about how to have the greatest giving impact through our time talent and treasure. My daughter will be joining the circle next year, and I hope to many more young women join us!
